Transition Projects is seeking a skilled Controller to oversee accounting operations and ensure financial integrity for a leading Portland nonprofit dedicated to ending homelessness. Reporting to the CFO, this role manages the organization’s daily accounting functions, financial reporting, and compliance with GAAP and nonprofit standards. Ideal candidates bring nonprofit accounting experience, strong leadership skills, and a passion for community impact.

Join Transition Projects, a leading Portland nonprofit helping people transition from homelessness to housing. Our 350+ employees serve more than 10,000 individuals each year—providing shelter, resources, and supportive services across 14 sites.
We’re seeking a Controller to oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensure financial accuracy, and support the Chief Financial Officer with reporting, compliance, and strategic planning.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee accounting operations, including month-end close and reconciliations
- Manage Accounts Payable/Receivable, contract billings, and general ledger entries
- Maintain compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and funder requirements
- Support audits, budgets, and financial analysis
- Supervise accounting staff and strengthen internal controls
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field and 4+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience (including 1+ year supervisory);
OR 6+ years of progressive nonprofit accounting experience (including 2+ years management)
- Proficiency in MAS90/Sage 100 or similar accounting software
- Strong understanding of GAAP and internal control procedures
- Excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills
