Mission Statement: The Portland Gay Men’s Chorus aspires to expand, redefine, and perfect the choral art through eclectic performances that honor and uplift our community and affirm the worth of all people.

 

Description: The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the administrative and development functions of the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus and bears this responsibility in collaboration with the Board of Directors. The ED carries out necessary management policies and general business operations of the Corporation, performs special assignments, and is empowered to exercise discretion and independent judgment in performing essential business for the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus. The ED will develop harmonious working relationships within the organization (staff and members) and represent the organization to the wider community, clients, donors, patrons and business associates. The ED will also maintain productive working relationships with GALA and other community choruses. The ED represents the Chorus through public speaking events.

 

Time commitment: 1.0 FTE salaried, exempt position. Flexible hours, must be able to work some evenings, and weekends.

 

Compensation:  Salary Commensurate with experience. Potential for performance-based bonuses as authorized by the Board of Directors.  Health and Dental benefits covered 100%.  A retirement savings plan is available through the State of Oregon Oregon Saves plan. Up to 15 days paid time off (PTO) and holidays.

 

Physical Requirements : Occasionally  lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds, such as boxes of files or equipment; Bends, stoops, and crouches to help set up equipment.; Consistently operates a computer, keyboard, and mouse for extended periods.

 

Reporting Structure:  The Executive Director (ED) is selected by the Board of Directors.   The Board of Directors will appoint a designated Board Representative to be the point of supervisory contact for the ED.

 

Evaluation:  The designated Board Representative solicits input from all Directors, Staff & designated committees as requested by the Board for the Executive Director’s evaluation.  Evaluations are  delivered semi-annually.

 

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

 

Development and Fundraising:

  • The ED may be asked to serve as the chair of the Development Committee, oversees the work of any Development Staff or Contractors, assists in the creation of an annual fundraising plan, and presents the plan to the Board as part of the annual budget.
  • The ED monitors and approves fundraising campaigns including, but not limited to, publications, solicitations, grant applications, event and fundraiser invitations or promotions, and special programs.
  • The ED directly interacts with major donors, and, in partnership with the board, is responsible for strengthening endowment and planned giving strategies.
  • The ED will be tasked with identifying, proposing and executing new and creative development  and fundraising opportunities. 

 

Financial: 

  • With the Board, Artistic Director and Conductor, Finance Committee, and other staff members, the ED develops the organization’s annual budget on a timely basis for Board approval.
  • The ED participates in the preparation of the Corporation’s annual budget, tracking of financial matters, and assists the Treasurer in the preparation of financial reports.
  • The ED oversees the disbursements of checks for the purchase of assets and services, make deposits, and disburse payroll as outlined in the policies of the organization.
  • The ED is a member of the Finance Committee.

 

Marketing:

  • The ED is responsible for all organizational marketing including an annual marketing plan, monitoring and approving any public relations materials distributed to the general public or news media such as press materials, playbills, flyers, newsletters, posters, promotional items, and logo usage.

 

 

Strategic Leadership: 

  • The ED collaborates with the Board of Directors regarding strategic planning and oversees implementation of any strategic plan approved by the Board of Directors.
  • The ED supports the Board in ensuring that strategic plan documents are updated and perpetuated.
  • The ED is responsible for creating and maintaining strategic partnerships and relationships with other organizations.

 

Artistic Production:

  • The ED collaborates with the Artistic Director and Conductor to ensure and approve the appropriate business arrangements for performances, recordings and tours.
  • The ED has final approval on any budget or expenditure that is incurred as a result of artistic planning, hiring staff, and contracting with artists.
  • The ED negotiates contracts for performance venues and serves as the liaison for house management, ticketing, as well as arrangements, and accommodations for guests and artists.

 

General Office:

  • The ED supervises all administrative staff, including volunteers.
  • The ED oversees daily business operations, negotiation of all contracts and serves as liaison with the office landlord.
  • The ED interfaces with Chorus officers and Board leadership.
